Biographical Sketch:

Professor Ehsani received B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Michigan before joining the department of Civil Engineering at the University of Arizona in 1982. His research has focused on seismic behavior of structures and innovative approaches to repair and retrofit civil structures with fiber composite (FRP) materials. These studies have been published in numerous technical papers in Earthquake Spectra and the ACI and ASCE Journals.

Dr. Ehsani is a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and the American Concrete Institute (ACI). A past director of the Arizona Chapter of ACI, Professor Ehsani has served as President of the Structural Engineers Association of Arizona. He is a registered professional engineer in Arizona and California.

Dr. Ehsani has been featured on CNN, National Public Radio, the History Channel, and in other media, including Engineering News Record (ENR) for his expertise on strengthening of structures, particularly related to earthquakes, terrorist attacks and other potential structural disasters. He holds several patents, including one on strengthening masonry structures with FRP. To view some of these articles, please click here.

Following the 1994 Northridge Earthquake, he founded QuakeWrap, Inc., a company specializing in repair and retrofit of structures with FRP products. These products have been successfully used in a number of project; among the company’s clients are: United Airlines, Paloverde Nuclear Power Plant, ITT Sheraton, St. Joseph Hospital in Phoenix and the historic Fox Theatre in Tucson, AZ.

QuakeWrap has been an industry leader in repair and retrofit of large diameter Prestressed Concrete Cylinder Pipes (PCCP) and received the 2008 Award of Excellence from the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) for strengthening over 1000 feet of a 10-ft diameter PCCP for a major power plant in New Mexico. The latest invention of Professor Ehsani is PipeMedic. This patent-pending product and method consists of laminated sheets constructed with carbon or glass fabrics that are pre-cured during the manufacturing process. The long and thin flat sheets are coiled and held in the coiled position with a strap. Once taken inside the pipe through the manhole, the strap is removed and the laminate opens on its own and will conform to the shape of any pipe!
